Yesterday was a sad day for those of us who shoot music concerts.

If you haven’t heard by now Jim Marshall passed away at the age of 74.
Jim Marshall, was a photographer whose images of Jimi Hendrix, the Rolling Stones, Johnny Cash and others in the 1960s and 1970s helped define rock ‘n’ roll photography.

Think Spot: Introduction to a New Series

Since I am not shooting shows 3-4 times a week to share with you, I thought I’d start a new series for the in between times called Think Spot.

It’ll be a series on why I think Christianity is not some knee jerk reaction to life, but rather, in my mind, a rational & hopefully thoughtful approach.

Why Christian Music

I’ve been to alot of show over the years..  My very first show was Rush Moving Pictures tour way back in 1985.. man that band rocked! and from that show on I was hooked.

Greateful Dead, Ozzy, Nugent, Van Halen, Jeff Beck, Eric Johnson, Crosby Stills & Nash and on and on..From Rock to Jazz.. To this day I haven’t given up my Cd collection, I still love rockin out to Rush, but …

Caleb, Kutless, Casting Crowns and Mom

The Casting Crowns “Until The Whole World Hears” Tour rolled into town in Feb., but due to some mix-ups I didn’t get the credentials to cover the show (it happens sometimes).

As the date got closer, I ended up wining a couple of tickets and Meet&Greet passes. If you don’t know what a Meet & Greet is, it’s actually kinda cool.. In the Christian Music Community these passes allow the fans to meet the bands backstage before the show, get some autographs, & chat for a few.. It’s a really nice deal.

3 songs and out

Hey what’s a better title to start things off then this.. ..If you’ve covered shows you know what I’m talking about.. if not, here’s the skinny..when your covering a show usually you can only shoot from the photo pit for three songs and then your out.

I’m starting with my archived shows & trying to date them in order. I also thought I’d share my work and some of my failures and successes from in the Pit. Truth is I have nothing to prove. I love photography, but I do have a daytime job so my income isn’t dependent on my work. This is nice from the perspective that I have a lot more freedom to post what I want and share whats on my heart without any concerns. Not that I would worry about it anyway..

I hope you like my work and find a pearl of wisdom here and there.

The David Crowder* Band… What more is there to say.. This was another band I’ve never seen live before and they we’re really something. I stumbled on one there records right before we left for Creation and I thought..yeah, these guys have some pretty cool music.. I really wasn’t quite expecting what I got from them live.

So… Ever Been to the Creation Festival?
This was my first time, even though it’s pretty much in my own backyard.. I know, I know, I don’t get out much.

If you want to sample a ton of bands, be part of about 70,000+ people, this is the place.. unless of course you need a shower everyday or don’t like the heat
My wife and I went up to cover the event and it was really an amazing experience… Imagine 70,000+ plus people rockin out to Jesus music… yep, Jesus music. Creation is a celebration, a huge party of people not celebrating the bands, but rather joining  their favorite bands celebrating the person of Jesus. Freeken’ amazing experience!
